Using Junk Mail Settings

    What is Junk Mail?

Junk Mail can be any unsolicited, unwanted, or unknown email message. Usually Junk Mail, or spam, are mass-emailed advertisements, and are harmless but annoying. However, more and more Junk Mail also includes spyware, viruses, phishing, or other malicious codes, and can be harmful to your computer.

If you receive any suspicious email messages, particularly anything containing attachments coming from unknown senders, do not open them. Instead, either delete them, or report them as Junk and add the sender’s email address to your Block List.

You can also report any spam or unsolicited email directly to us. To learn how to report spam, click here.

How do I change my Junk Mail settings?

You can change your email settings at any time. To get to the Junk Mail Settings page:

    1. Sign-in to Message Center, click on Options and select Junk Mail.
    2. Choose one of the three options:

  • Off: Choosing this setting lets you see every email, so you can decide which to keep and which to delete.
  • Standard: This setting automatically sends mail you’ve identified as Junk to your Junk Mail folder, where you can review it if you want.
  • Exclusive: This setting only allows messages from senders in your Address Book to your inbox, and sends all other messages to your Junk Mail Folder.
  • You can also decide how long to keep messages in the Junk Mail folder before they are automatically deleted by using the pull-down menu. Note: You can delete the messages in your Junk Mail folder at any time by opening it, placing a check next to the message you want to delete, and clicking Delete.

I accidentally sent a message to the Junk Mail folder.

If you accidentally sent a message to the Junk Mail folder, or if a message that was automatically sent there is not Junk, you can retrieve it.

    1. Log in to Message Center.
    2. Open the Junk Mail folder.
    3. Check the box next to the message that isn’t Junk Mail, and click the Not Junk button.

My messages are being sent to Junk Mail.

If you have messages being sent to Junk Mail, you may need to change your Junk Mail settings to Off or Standard. A setting of Exclusive will automatically send all messages except those from senders in your Address Book to the Junk Mail folder. To prevent this, you can either modify your Junk Mail settings, or add the sender to your Address Book.
How do I report Junk Mail or spam?

A feature of Message Center is the ability to report unsolicited junk mail or spam.

We automatically update our Junk Mail settings based on member reports. Your report helps us block future junk email with similar characteristics. While we may not be able to block individual messages, if enough members request a permanent block, it will be considered.

You can also use your Block List to block email from specific senders. Click here to sign up for a NetZero HiSpeed or MegaMail account and have access to extended Block Lists for more number of entries, Sort & Delete Settings and many more.

There are two ways to Report Junk:

    Method 1:

    1. From your Inbox, identify messages that you know are junk by their sender name or subject line.
    2. Click the checkbox next to each junk message.
    3. Click the Report as Junk button.

Note: If you’d like to add the sender to your Block List first, click on the down arrow on the right of the Report as Junk button, and select Block Sender.

    Method 2:

    1. From your Inbox, open a message by clicking the sender’s name or the subject.
    2. Once the message is open and you determine it to be junk mail, click the Report as Junk button.

Note: If you’d like to add the sender to your Block List first, click on the down arrow on the right of the Report as Junk button, and select Block Sender.

I reported a message as Junk Mail, but keep getting it in my inbox.

If you’ve continue to see messages you’ve reported as Junk (or different messages from the same sender) in your Inbox, you may need to change your Junk Mail settings to Standard or Exclusive.

If your setting is Standard, you may need to ensure that the sender is added to your Block List.

Please note that the only way to ensure you do not receive any unwanted email in your inbox is to use the Exclusive Junk Mail setting. The people who send unwanted or unsolicited email change their sender address and subject line very frequently, so reporting them as Junk Mail and adding them to your Block List may not be a permanent solution. Using the Exclusive setting ensures that only messages sent from senders in your Address Book will be shown in your inbox.

My Junk Mail gets redelivered when I check my email using other email programs.

If you check your NetZero email with an email program other than Message Center (such as Outlook Express, Yahoo!, etc), all of your messages including Junk Mail will get downloaded by default.

To change the setting to avoid downloading Junk Mail to your email program:

    1. Sign-in to Message Center, click on Options and select Junk Mail.
    2. In the Junk Mail Settings section click on the button next to POP email messages only from my Inbox.
    3. Click Save to finish.

How long do messages stay in the Junk Mail folder?

You can choose how long messages remain in your Junk Mail folder by changing the setting at any time.

    1. Sign-in to Message Center, click on Options, and select Junk Mail.
    2. In the Junk Mail Settings window click on the drop-down menu under Junk Mail Folder Auto-Delete Setting, and select how long you want the messages to remain before they are deleted. The default setting is 30 days.
    3. Click Save when finished.

Please note that if you select 0 days, the Junk Mail will be automatically deleted as soon as it’s received. Once a message is deleted from your Junk Mail folder, you can view it in your Trash folder. Once your Trash folder is emptied, the message is permanently deleted.
