Common Windows Errors / Solutions

"Dial-Up Networking could not negotiate a compatible set of network protocols."

A. One or more of the Network Components may have become corrupt. Delete and reinstall the connection.

  1. On your desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.
  1. Double-click the Dial-Up Networking folder.
  1. Delete the NetZero connection by clicking on it once to highlight it and pressing the Delete key on your keyboard.
  1. Double-click the Make New Connection icon.
  1. In the Type a name for the computer you are dialing text box, type NetZero.
  2. Click on the Configure button.
  1. Under Maximum Speed, select the appropriate port speed for your modem. For 28.8 modems use 38400 and for 56k use 57600.
  2. Ensure that the Only connect at this speed box is not checked.
  3. Click OK.
  1. Click Next.
  1. In the Area code and Telephone number text boxes, type 999 999-9999.
  2. Click Next.
  1. Click on the Finish button.
  1. Click once on the NetZero icon to highlight it.
  1. From the File menu, select Properties.
  1. Select the Server Types Tab.
  1. Uncheck Log on to network.
  2. Check Enable software compression.
  3. Uncheck Require encrypted password.
  4. Uncheck NetBEUI.
  5. Uncheck IPX/SPX Compatible.
  6. Check TCP/IP.
  7. Click OK to exit.

This should resolve the issue. Try connecting to NetZero again.


B. Verify network components

  1. On your desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.
  1. Double-click the Control Panel icon.
  1. Double-click the Network icon.
  1. In the window under The following network components are installed, the following three network components should be installed:
    • Client for Microsoft Networks
    • Dialup Adapter
    • TCP/IP
  1. Add and/or remove network components until only the three components specified above remain.
    Note: If you are on a LAN (Local Are Network), do not remove the network adaptors and protocols. Please contact your administrator for instructions. If you use AOL, do not remove AOL Adaptor or TCP/IP.
  2. Click OK.
  1. When you see Do you want to restart your computer now, click Yes.
  2. Wait for the computer to reboot.
  3. Once Windows restarts, you may be prompted for a password. Do not enter a password.
  4. Click OK.
  5. If you are prompted to confirm the new password, click OK.
  6. Retry the NetZero Connection.

C. Check component properties

  1. On your desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.
  1. Double-click the Control Panel icon.
  1. Double-click the Network icon.
  1. Double-click Dial-Up Adapter.
  1. Select the Bindings tab.
  1. Ensure that box next to TCP/IP is checked.
  2. Click OK to exit.

This should resolve the issue. Try connecting to NetZero again.
